Kenwood Cook For Life

Welcome to the Kenwood Cook for Life resource – bringing creativity to your school kitchen and classroom!

Kenwood is celebrating over 60 years of revolutionising food preparation and cooking in the home. As a company with a British heritage, we appreciate the benefits of promoting healthy food choices, using fresh, local produce to provide the nutritional balance required for a child’s daily diet. To celebrate this anniversary, we have developed this online Cook for Life resource and are sponsoring the British Food Fortnight Cook for Life Challenge.

Kenwood Cook for Life Challenge
Running from 20th September to 5th October 2008 and now in its seventh year, British Food Fortnight is the biggest national celebration of the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces. The event’s initiative invites cooks and chefs to work with schools to teach children how to cook. This year, organisations representing over 9,000 chefs have volunteered to take part. Retailers, farmers and producers are also signing up to participate.

At Kenwood, we are keen to support this initiative by sponsoring the competition to find out what activities schools are undertaking for British Food Fortnight.

To complement the Cook for Life Challenge, Kenwood has developed this online cross-curricular resource to enrich Primary schools’ delivery of Food Technology. The resource is FREE to register and download and explores creativity in the kitchen using the themes of Lifestyle, Food Culture and British Produce in support of a number of Primary National curricula objectives.

Source Materials

We have also added some additional topics to our Kenwood Cook for Life source materials to support this years BFF challenge and curriculum outcomes including:

In the Lifestyle section of the website we have added the following three new topics:

  • Hydration information sheet - In this section we have drawn together factual information on the importance of hydration, it’s effects on the pupils brains and their ability to perform at their best and top tips for ensuring that your pupils are drinking enough.
  • Healthy lunchbox guidelines - This section provides key information to support pupil’s in making healthy choices for their lunch boxes to contribute to achieving a daily healthy eating balance.
  • Eat for Life – Maintaining a healthy balance.

In the British Food section of the website we have added key geographical and historical, farm to table food facts and key information on food miles and their calculation to support pupils’ geographical enquiry into the impact of food miles on the environment.

In the Food Culture section of the website we have added an information sheet based on global research to support classroom discussion on food trends. In this section we have put together research data from a number of sources, which reflect the current trends and influences on food purchase and consumption in the UK. Use this information to develop pupil’s understanding and to support their own small scale research into their own family’s or whole class purchase and consumption habits.

Plus, we have also added the following items:

  • An image bank – visit our gallery of popular food-related images that teachers can download and use as required. This can be found in our Teacher’s Notes section.
  • An online game – an interactive learning game that can be used within an IT suite or on an interactive white board as part of the lesson. The game is designed to allow pupils to select appropriate items for their lunchbox from the different food groups to ensure that the have created a balanced lunch. This can be found in the Lifestyle section of the Source Material section. Coming May 2008.
  • Workshop promotion – register for our FREE schools’ workshops! Limited places are on offer.
